Join the Road Crossing Patrol - transcript

This transcript is for the video shown on our School crossing patrols webpage.

[The school crossing patrol talks to the camera]

"My name is Jane and I've been doing the crossing patrol for around 9 years."

[Images of Jane arriving at the local shop where she stores and collects her lollipop and hat, and taking position at the crossing]

"The roads are busy. More houses are being built, more cars, and so the children need to be crossed safely on their way to school."

[Jane standing at the crossing watching children cross]

[Young boy being interviewed as Jane crosses school children]

"I think it's good to have a school crossing patrol near our school. The kids crossing all the time can be safe on the roads."

[Interview of 2 girls with Jane in the background]

"I think it’s good to have a lollipop lady because it helps us to get to school safe. If we didn't have one, then maybe somebody would simply crash into somebody."

[Parent being interviewed with Jane and children crossing in the background]

"It's good to have a school crossing patrol near our school because, as a parent, it gives me peace of mind that I know my children will be able to get to school safely in the morning, especially when they reach year 6 when they're allowed to walk on their own."

[A new Road Crossing Patrol staff member is talking to the camera, Joesph]

"I decided to join because it helps with families and children and general people. Members of the public crossing the road safely, and the hours and flexibility that the job offers works good for me and family."

[Whilst talking to the camera, Joesph switches on the flashing school patrol lights]

[Jane crossing children and talking]

"I'm part of the community. It's part of a routine. It gets you out of bed. It makes you smile every morning. Every day is different and it's fun."

[Young girl talking to the camera whilst it pans out to the smiling face of Jane]

"She's always there and she always smiles and she always says good morning."

[Grandparent being interviewed coupled with him and his grandchildren and other children crossing]

"My granddaughter actually loves walking to school, mainly because of Jane and crossing the road. We'll actually stay on the other side of the road longer just to cross with her. It gives us confidence as grandparents, and obviously parents, that our children are being looked after and it's safe to cross in a busy road like this."

[Joseph talking to the camera with his lollipop]

"With the families, I know them, some of them by name, some of them by face. They bring their children to the crossing and they know the children are safe in my hands and get much safer to school."

[Clips of Joseph safely crossing children]

[Joseph continues talking to the camera]

"Some of them will stand a bit further away to give a child that bit of freedom and responsibility, which works good for me and great with families."

[Jane talking to the camera at her crossing point]

"With doing this job you do in the morning and in the afternoon so you can fit in another job in between."

[Joseph continues talking to the camera]

"You pay into a local government pension. Obviously it's term time work, but it's pro rata pay. So for me, if I'm not at work during the summer holidays, as an example, I get paid for it so I can enjoy time with the family on holiday. Get paid for it. What more could you ask for?

[Joseph smiling into the camera]

[Jane at her crossing point with lollipop talking to the camera)

"It brings joy, happiness, you smile every day, you see people smiling every day. It's just fantastic. I love it."

[Images of Jane and 2 children smiling and dancing around the lollipop on pavement]
