Work experience with the Street Works Team
You'll help us coordinate and manage activities on the highway to allow enough time and space for works to be carried out safely while minimising the disruption to traffic.
Duration: 5 days, Monday to Friday

Who should apply
This placement is ideal for students who are:
- aged 16 years or over
- studying or interested in engineering, highways or infrastructure
- curious about how road networks are managed and maintained
- looking to gain some experience working within local government.
You must be able to travel to one of the following locations:
- Sandwich
- Aylesford Highways Depot (preferred)
- Kroner House (Ashford)
- Brook House (Whitstable).
Roles
We have a range of roles which means you could be working within any of the following:
Business support
You will:
- work alongside technical support officers
- learn how enquiries are received and handled
- understand how enquiries are triaged and passed on to inspectors and coordinators
- develop an understanding of internal processes and systems.
Coordinators
- explore how the road network is managed behind the scenes
- learn about permits and street works planning
- understand the wider impact of roadworks on traffic flow and the network
- gain insight into decision-making and strategic coordination.
Inspectors
You will:
- accompany inspectors on site visits (shadowing only)
- observe how inspections are carried out
- learn about traffic management and safety measures
- understand how decisions made on-site can affect the wider road network.
Skills and experience
This work experince opportunity will give you:

- exposure to real-world decision making and operations
- an understanding of how public services manage infrastructure.
Health and safety
While on work experience, all site visits will be supervised and for observation purposes only. You are not expected to enter active work sites. We will provide you with high-visibility (hi-vis) clothing if required.
